![]() I’ve tried many different brands of chalk paint but this was my first time using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. #CHALK PAINT FURNITURE TRIAL#I’ve tried it all when it comes to painting and refinishing furniture and Lord only knows I’ve learned a lot through trial and error. I love the open shelving and I can’t believe just how much a few easy tweaks completely transformed the overall look and functionality of the piece. We removed the decorative top piece, took out the top drawers, added beadboard backing and installed two open shelves. You will notice that in addition to paint, the tall chest got repurposed to make it a little more practical for the space. Here is a good look at the before and after. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out. It was sturdy and had good lines, but the color, shiny finish and outdated hardware was screaming “make me beautiful again!” And I think we succeeded. The furniture was hand-me-down 1990’s bedroom furniture that my parents were getting rid of. She has a dark grey color called A Good Man is Hard to Find and one that’s just Black.I recently shared our son’s DIY neutral nursery reveal and by far one of the biggest transformations was the chalk painted furniture. If I don’t make my own chalk paint, my favorite paint is Amy Howard at Home One Step Paint. Of Course, Walmart and Home Depot have chalk paint as well. Most flea markets have many brands of paints for furniture and boutiques sell furniture paint sometimes too. If you aren’t interested in making your own black chalk paint, you can buy it from local stores and online. ![]() Where to buy Ready made black chalk paint You can use wax or clear latex sealer but if you want the finish to last you should seal it. Wax will hurt the transfer or glue’s chance of adhering properly to the surface. Use paint transfers or any other type of embellishment before you wax.It’s less messy and chalk paint is easy to water distress. Distress with water and a scotch pad rather than sanding.The bristles are denser and hold the thick paint better than latex brushes. Use a good quality chalk paint brush like my Paint Pixie #12 or #8 are my favorites.I know it’s not fun but it will show flaws. Sand if there are rough patches or splinters.Even chalk paint won’t stick to grease and grime or surface oils. Always clean whatever you are painting with either Krud Kutter Deglosser or with warm water and a good quality dish soap.Keep it in an airtight container when not in use.Stir it well until you don’t see white anymore.Pour your liquid mix into a quart of the latex paint you have chosen.The more water you use could water down the paint mixture and you want all the benefits of a thicker chalk paint.
